Toby Rose Interview

We recently caught up with Toby Rose after the release of his latest single ‘Touch Di Road’ with tropical house legend De Hofnar. Here is what he had to say about his career to date and his latest track.

Hi, Toby Rose thanks for taking the time to talk to us at Melodic Nation. For people that don’t know how long have you been producing for and how did you come up with your artist name?

I started producing when I was around 16 years old. I come from a family that loves music so my household was filled with a lot of different genres. Everything from Elvis Presley, ABBA or even Metallica was always playing in the background of my childhood. I started to take my music more serious when I was around 19 years old (I’m 24 now). My real name is Tobias so my nickname has always been Toby. I got two rose tattoos on each arm and it’s my mother’s favourite flower so I guess that’s where I got the Rose from.

What artists inspired you to produce dance-pop, tropical house music?

Back in 2015, I heard a track called Oxas by De Hofnar and I was blown away by the track. I then got introduced to artists such as Sam Feldt and Lost Frequencies which I would say are the 3 artists that got me into making the genre I’m creating today.

Most of your recent releases have been on Soave, how did you get in touch with that record label?

I was working on a song with the singer Ben Hutcheson and a friend of his pitched our song ‘Make Me Hurt’ to Soave Records. They really liked it so I sent them few more of my other tracks I was working on at the time and they then offered me a long-term contract after that. I’ve gotten a lot of attention from other labels but I feel home at Soave Records.

Recently you released ‘Touch Di Road’ with De Hofnar how did that collaboration come about?

So I was working a reggae inspired track and my label really liked the idea. They then asked me if I wanted to collaborate with De Hofnar on it and finish the song together. I was so shocked since his music is what inspired me to start creating tropical house so I of course said yes! After a month or so we had created ‘Touch Di Road’

‘Touch Di Road’ has a reggae feel to it, was it always the plan to release a song like this or was it a happy accident?

It was actually a happy accident. I was so tired of the weather here in Denmark since it’s always raining so I wanted to create something that would give me a taste of summer.

Do you have any tips for upcoming artists?

Always create something you want to listen to yourself and never stop believing in your own music.

Has the recent pandemic changed the way you think about or make music?

Before the pandemic, I was actually DJ’ing a lot more but I’ve always wanted to create dance-pop or tropical tunes so it hasn’t affected my music production. I just produce a lot more than I used to nowadays.

Finally, any plans you can share with us for the rest of 2021?

I can’t share much but I can say that 2021 is going to be a year with A LOT of new songs from Toby Rose!
