Interview with Novalight

We recently got the chance to interview young upcoming, German producer who goes by the name of Novalight. Who recently did a remix for the Selena Gomez track ‘Back To You’ which was premiered by Soave.

So what is your real name and how did you come up with your artist name?

My real name is Felix. My Surname shouldn’t matter ๐Ÿ˜‰

I actually don’t know how I came up with “Novalight” I just remember that I chose it in 2011 when I first started producing progressive house. I think it doesn’t fit my style anymore since I’m producing mostly deep house, but at the end the name doesn’t matter. (I mean “DJ Snake”?… c’mon :D)

Where are you from?

I’m from Germany. My Hometown is “Leipzig”, but I’m currently living and studying in “Darmstadt”.

Your older tracks were mainly progressive house. What made you change to producing tropical house?

I’m producing whatever I feel like at the moment and what I’m listening to the most. Back then it was progressive house and now it’s mostly deep, future and tropical house. I ‘ve got bored listening to progressive house after some years cause I felt like it doesn’t evolve anymore. Everything started to sound the same. So I listened to other genres. Additionally I don’t like to produce the same stuff over and over again, so I like switching genres. When doing a remix I choose a genre based on the vibe of the original track.

Who are your biggest dj inspirations?

Tough question… Some years ago I would have named a few. Galantis was my favourite. Their first album was the best album I ever heared in my life. The second one was kinda disappointing to me. Right now, I don’t think I have an idol. Maybe Robin Schulz? I mean he is also german, reached the top, supported one of my tracks twice and I really respect him as an artist.

But when it comes to production skills especially in deep and tropical house I’m a big fan of YOUNOTUS.

Recently you remixed ‘Back To You’ by Selena Gomez what made you choose that track?

Obviously the second season of 13 reasons why. But I also follow selena on her socials. When I heared that song I instantly thought I need to remix it. It was perfect for a tropical remix. I mean the tempo and the mood was already there, so I got inspired pretty fast.

How did soave come into contact with you for releasing that track?

Actually I wrote them and asked them if they want to release the remix on their remix account. The owner is really humble and a great guy. He is always supporting good music and doesn’t care how big you are as an artist. He is all about the music.

As we have seen your growth has been down to free downloads would you recommend this to young producers? Is this something you want to continue doing?

I think it’s a great way to start out and get some exposure. And to be honest you won’t make much money through sales. So streaming is the way to go. My tracks are mostly unofficial remixes so you won’t find them on any streaming service and I can’t sale them (obviously).
If you want to earn some money with your music get your ass on spotify ๐Ÿ˜‰

Any plans for the rest of the year?

Actually too many, lol. I need to finally get the bureaucracy done which prevents me from releasing original stuff. I also want to get some gigs for next year and I want to finish at least four more tracks till the end of this year.I also thought about creating a youtube channel where I upload some tutorials and tips and tricks videos for producers. But who knows if it will happen, since I’m not a big fan of standing in front of the camera.
